British Gas Site to Become Self Storage Business in Gloucester (England)

A former British Gas site in Gloucester is to become home to a self storage business.

The vacant brownfield land in Horton Road was once home to a huge gasholder which towered over Horton Road Hospital.

It will now become home to 155 vivid blue containers and an office managed by Blue Self Storage Ltd.

The company has been granted persimmon by Gloucester City Council to change the use of the land so it can open its fourth facility.

It is a “significant milestone” for the Welsh business which was founded in 1988 and has sites in Cardiff, Bridgend and Newcastle.

Gloucester will be its second site outside of Wales and an announcement on its website said: “We’re excited to bring our brand of smart and affordable storage solutions to a whole new audience in Gloucester and its surrounding areas.”

The 0.53ha parcel of land sits to the east of Horton Road and south of Myers Road, about 700m from Gloucester City Centre and close to Triangle Park and the railway tracks.

After British Gas left the site it was remediated with a geotextile membrane and crushed concrete to ensure any harmful materials were contained below ground.

The containers it will now be home to will range from 2-12m in length and up to 21.6m high. They will be rented to customers who will be allowed access to them using a unique QR code on a 24-hour basis, every day of the year.

The site will have an electric gate and perimeter fencing with access off Horton Road.

As part of the permission the company must pay £13,333 for flood improvement works to Wotton Brook to mitigate an increased flood risk caused by the development.
