Located off Ambrose Street in Ashburys, the 125,000 sq ft facility would replace existing 1970s industrial warehouses.

Storage World, which operates three sites across Greater Manchester, submitted proposals for the Ardwick scheme in 2022.

The £8m development would be constructed on a 1.2-acre site and comprise between 800 and 1,000 storage units.

Now, Manchester City Council has approved the five-storey project.

The scheme would be Storage World’s second in Manchester, the first being less than a mile away on Ashton Old Road. The two other sites are in Middleton and Airport City.

P4 Planning advised Storage World on the application and Bate and Taylor Architects led on design.

To find out more about the scheme, search for reference number 135680/FO/2022 on Manchester City Council’s planning portal.

As well as providing storage space, the developer behind the project anticipates some of the units would be used to house small businesses.

Attracted by cheaper rents and flexible contracts, there has been a rise in companies turning towards self-storage facilities as workspace alternatives.
