A huge new self-storage facility is set to open in Swindon following the acquisition of a brownfield site in the Wiltshire town.

Cinch Self Storage has added to its portfolio of 20 facilities, which are mainly based in the South East, by buying up the site at Cheney Manor Industrial Estate to the north west of Swindon town centre. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.

The company said the new self-storage building was scheduled to open in late 2024, and would provide 68,000 sq ft of lettable space for domestic and business customers. More than 700 units will be available for use as self-storage rooms, workshops, retail units, as well as office spaces for companies.

Bosses said the move would help boost the local economy, attract businesses to the area, and drive local job creation.

Co-founder Richard Owen said: “We are delighted to be adding a new spacious site to our growing portfolio and bringing our self- storage offering to residents and businesses in Swindon. Today our portfolio exceeds 850,000 sq ft of assets in operation or development, and we are continually on the lookout for opportunities to acquire additional sites.

With a firm eye on sustainability, we have designed the facility with the needs and priorities of local businesses in mind. Through regenerating a neglected brownfield site, implementing a number of environmentally-friendly, and offering ideal work spaces for entrepreneurs and businesses – Cinch Storage Swindon will offer win-wins for the local economy and the environment.”

Founded in Oxfordshire in 2018, Cinch now employs more than 40 full-time staff. It currently has nine self-storage facilities under development, with three expected to open later this year.
