Cheadle Self Storage Facility to Be Rebuilt After Fire

Orbit to replace fire-destroyed self-storage in Stockport - Place North West

After being destroyed by fire in 2022, plans have been submitted to Stockport Council to rebuild a self storage facility off the A34 in Cheadle.

Should Orbit’s plans be approved, construction on site is expected to directly support around 170 full-time equivalent jobs and add over £27 million into the local economy, falling to £12 million once the self storage facility is operational.”

Site owners, Orbit Investments (part of the Emerson Group of companies, which includes commercial landlord Orbit Developments), have submitted plans to replace the Armadillo self storage warehouse after a major fire in February last year tore through the property. Surviving parts of the building were declared unsafe and have already been demolished and removed from the site.

Proposals for the new site on Earl Road, close to the A34/A555 Stanley Green junction will see a taller building with a smaller footprint replace the previous facility. By reducing the footprint of the self storage facility, additional development could be brought forward on remaining parts of the 4.3 acre site in a subsequent planning application, with the site in close proximity to other major projects, including the delivery of a 135,000 sq ft warehousing scheme at the site of the former BASF offices and the nearby Handforth Garden Village housing scheme.

Should Orbit’s plans be approved, construction on site is expected to directly support around 170 full-time equivalent jobs and add over £27 million into the local economy, falling to £12 million once the self storage facility is operational.

Orbit have been advised by Maddox Planning in developing the proposals.
