An application to erect 120 self-storage containers for access by members of the public has been approved by the district council.
The series of 2.14m x 2.09m containers is to occupy a plot of land at Gatebeck, near Kendal. Two parking spaces are also to be created at the site – which customers will be able to access using codes.
The design and access statement says the containers will be managed by ‘an established company with experience of providing self-storage sites’.
The statement says it is expected the majority of customers will use the site, situated to the east of unit 1, Beckside Business Park, for ‘long-term storage’ and will visit infrequently.
Concerns were raised by members of the public over an element of the initial plan, submitted by Mr. and Mrs. Whitehead, that revealed the site was intended to be open round the clock.
Mark and Evelyn Stott, who own property at Gatebeck, said this would have led to ‘noise and disturbance to the residents of the village during unsociable hours’.
Approval of the site was granted by South Lakeland District Council subject to a number of conditions, including that the site would only be open between 7 am and 9 pm each day.
