A new development in a prominent spot near Bolton town centre is set to open later this year.
The scheme will see a large patch of wasteland at the corner of Manchester Road and Lower Bridgeman Street turned into a multi-storey self-storage unit.
The development, which was approved in 2023, will be run by self-storage company Shurgard, which operates facilities across the country.
The firm has confirmed that it is looking to open it in late December this year.
It says it will feature online “eRental”, digital access and a variety of unit sizes tailored to the needs of the customers.
The project has been visibly progressing in recent weeks, with the framework of the building having been erected.
A spokesperson for Shurgard said: “The construction site observed on Lower Bridgeman Street is indeed the ongoing development of a brand-new Shurgard self-storage facility in Bolton.
“The project will deliver a net lettable area of 5,300 sq/m of storage units.
“The future facility will offer a convenient and secure storage experience, with modern features such as online eRental, digital access, and a variety of unit sizes tailored to local customer needs.
“This site is part of Shurgard’s continued development pipeline.”
They added: “The location sits between Manchester Road and Gorton Street, just outside the Bolton town centre.
“This project is one among several new facilities currently being added across the UK.” The spokesperson added that Shurgard is looking to open the facility in “late December”.
The area, which is at the side of the Audi garage on Manchester Road, was a patch of wasteland for around 15 years, having previously been the Excel Leisure Centre.
The area had previously been set aside for housing, according to Bolton Council’s development plan.
It had been in the allocation plan “for 10 years” before part of the land was used to build the Audi dealership, leaving the narrow strip of land where the self-storage facility is being built.
