A new self-storage facility is planned for Dagenham – with a proposal to demolish a number of buildings on an industrial estate to make space for it.

A planning application was submitted by Ricky Mann of Manns Self Storage Containers Ltd in December to change the use of a waste management facility at the Old Bus Depot in Perry Road, Dagenham to become a self-storage facility.

The proposal includes the demolition of buildings on the site and the installation of 510 shipping containers for storage. Additional planning documents were submitted on February 5 when the application was validated by the council.

According to the design and access statement, Manns Self Storage Containers Ltd is a “new business that seeks to use the land for beneficial purposes”.

The development site has been cleared and is vacant, according to planning documents.  They add that “the provision of a self-storage facility meets a current demand for such facilities and will not require significant infrastructure redevelopment”.

The site will require investment to provide the containers, according to the documents, which will be determined by demand and will be added incrementally as the business develops.

According to the design and access statement, the facility will create eight jobs.

It added: “Whilst there are some self-storage facilities in the east London area, some of these are in regeneration areas and are also being changed.”
