Work is well underway on the city’s latest self-storage facility. Framework has gone up at the Fenton site in what would pretty much wrap up developments on the former Diamond Gimson works.
The company shut the King Street factory – which manufactured products serving the home tableware market – back in 1999. The factory was later cleared and over the years has been redeveloped.
Across the stretch, on Alan Alfred Avenue, there is a KFC, with a Costa and service station later added where the factory once sat. Now the plot around the King Street and A50 junction is set to become a self-storage facility.
Motorists on the much-used junction had been left wondering just what the development entailed with the framework overlooking a busy roundabout. It was back in May last year when Stoke-on-Trent City Council rubber-stamped the scheme for a self-storage facility.
It marks the conclusion of works for the former factory site – which had once been earmarked for a hotel. Once the works are completed it will play host to Go Store Self Storage.
A design and access statement in support of the development states: “The proposed development will deliver a new commercial unit to Diamond Park and complement the existing neighbouring facilities. The proposal will also result in the regeneration of a prominent undeveloped site and create a significant level of investment as well as employment opportunities during both the construction and operational phases.”
The facility is expected to launch in January.
