Self-Storage Facility Plan For Kilmarnock as Site With 108 Shipping Containers is Considered

A self-storage facility with more than 100 containers could be opening in Kilmarnock.

Plans have been lodged to build a facility at Moorfield North Industrial Estate, next to MKM Building supplies and across from Braehead Foods/Cook School Scotland.

The tarmacked site would host 108 containers in total with 78 of those being huge shipping containers measuring 20ft x 8ft. The other 30 would be smaller, measuring in at 10ft x 8ft.

HMC Holdings – a family business operating for more than 100 years – is the firm behind the blueprints, they currently own Ayrshire Storage Centre on Irvine’s Ailsa Road.

Bosses say the Irvine site has proved “highly successful and a real benefit to the local community for its domestic and commercial storage needs.”

Customers can get 24-hour access to storage containers at the full-automated Irvine facility. The application does not specify if the same service will be extended to Kilmarnock.

A supporting statement reads: “It is intended that the proposed development at Moorfield North Industrial Estate would replicate the style of the development in Irvine with similar specification to 2.5 metres high mesh profiled security fence with keypad controlled sliding entrance gate access.

“The layout within the site is shown accommodation for 78no. 20’ x 8’containers and 30no. 10’ x 8’ containers.

“These would be set single-storey and would not be stacked. The site would be finished with a tarmac surface finish throughout with a ‘landscaped’ gravel strip along the west site boundary suitable for surface water soakaway.”

East Ayrshire Council planners will rule on the proposals at a future date.
